It’s always inspiring to come across an artist whose work demonstrates an uninhibited style and great use of color. Minjae Lee, who lives and works in Seoul, South Korea, is one such artist. His highly skilled illustrations which focus on the youthful beauty of the female face remind us of tribal art around the world as different cultures express their unique qualities.

He seems to invent his own sense of meaning through color, shape and symbolism and provides so much detail that you can spend quite a bit of time just looking at the visual elements. To be able to see an artist at work is a treasured bonus and we are happy to provide an insight into his latest creation in the following time lapse video.

As an artist in his early 20′s, it will be interesting to see how or if his perception of beauty changes as he ages. We look forward to watching his career evolve! For more information on Minjae Lee’s work and portfolio, please click here.

A Playful Use of Color

March 9th, 2010 No comments

I just saw the latest from the imagination of Michel Gondry, one of my favorite music video directors.  The concept is so simple and playful. A great accompaniment for Mia Doi Todd’s  “Open Your Heart.” Check it out:

After watching the video, it had me scanning Oaxaca for interesting juxtapositions of color (an easy task in such a colorful city). Where does color and image play a role in your life?  Can you think of a particular place or time where color evoked a feeling or memory for you?  Are there any images in our gallery that use color in a way that you find intriguing?  Let us know!

Cheers,

Megan

Is Seeing Believing?

Does what we see really exist, or is it based on the context of surrounding elements? Do we see with our eyes or our minds? Is the color Red always Red? Pretty heady stuff, I know, but important for anyone who seeks to grow in understanding the amazing world we live in.

A new presentation by TED just might have you questioning your own sense of reality. As a photographer and art director, I repeatedly deal with the power of color and perception. Perhaps the most important thing I have learned is to not pre-judge what I see but to approach every new visual idea with a sense of wonder. You don’t have to be an artist or scientist to benefit from wrapping your head around the issues presented in this piece. Actually the questions raised have far reaching implications for just about every thing we do in life.
